A Thousand Books

If I was asked what my favorite hobby was, I would most definitely say reading. I love reading almost any book (except for romance and mystery books). Ever since I read Harry Potter in first grade, I have always had a great love of reading. Anybody who knows me has probably seen me reading a book one day, and will come back the next day to find that I have already finished that book and have moved on to a new one. I remember in seventh grade we had a reading log where we kept track of all the books we had read that year, and that nobody was that surprised when at the end of the year I had over a hundred books logged on my sheet. When I find a book that I really like, everything else in the world fades away and is replaced with an intense need to read that book as quickly as possible. My brain stops wasting energy on unnecessary things like moving or talking (or even eating) and diverts all of its focus onto reaching the end of the book. I love reading about all sorts of different stories and adventures. When I’m focused on a good book, I even sometimes stop consciously reading the words, and begin to see the story unfold in my mind’s eye.

Different people have different interpretations pf my voracious appetite for reading. On the basketball team, many of my teammates see reading as being a waste of time. They think that I would be better spending my time doing other things, and don’t see the value of reading. On the other hand most teachers have encouraged my reading, except when I do it while they are talking. I remember my seventh grade reading teacher, Mr. Cullah, said that he thought that I love to read because I am naturally curious, and books contain a wealth of information to be gained. I agree with Mr. Cullah’s opinion. I have learned so much through reading a wide variety of books. I have learned at least a little bit about a spectrum of topics broad enough to include anything from ancient history to quantum physics. I’m not saying I’m an expert in these things, but by reading a wide variety of books I learn at least some cursory details.
